James is bad at admitting unfortunate truths about himself: his real fears about being sorted into Slytherin back when he'd first come to Hogwarts, or the fact that he wasn't really sure what he wanted to do with his life and what if he was a disappointment to the family name, and how he'd sat and dwelled on the memory of Scorpius's mouth against his own every night since the other boy had arrived.

He rubs at his own cheek, a little tingly with from the drink, before he leads Scorpius back to his room.

It's tidy, mostly, though the bed is a nest of blankets and pillows. There's a writing desk in one corner, and glowing, shifting stars cover his ceiling, giving the dark room a faint glow. He turns on a lamp, padding over to drop down onto his bed, indicating the chair at his desk for Scorpius.

Scorpius closes the door behind him, all too aware of how warm it feels in James's room...and all too aware as well that it's his imagination. It's not really warmer in here because he's alone with James; his mind is just playing foul tricks on him.

"So," Scorpius says. He doesn't take a seat right away. He's never been in James's room, and he's...curious. So he walks around it, touching things.

Scorpius will find a bookshelf, piled high with things - mostly novels, wizard and muggle fiction both. It's mostly high fantasy, magic and adventures, though a slightly impressive collection of muggle comic book rests nestled in there as well. There are other shelves in the room, too, some with photos, others with knick-knacks from his uncle's store. A half-open trunk at the foot of his bed is filled with pranks and textbooks he chose not to get rid of. Peeking out of his closet is a small pile of dirty clothes, and somewhere at the head of his bed is a large stuffed stag.

He doesn't seem embarrassed about any of this, instead just following Scorpius with his eyes. "So..."

"Certainly enjoy Muggle literature, don't you?"

There's a slight tone of distaste to his voice, but it's more in regards to the comic book collection than the rest of the stuff. He'd read a Muggle book or two on Al's insistence and hadn't at all found them "dumb and dismal" as his mother said they'd be. They seemed similarly fascinated by magic as some wizards were with the Muggle world.

"Kind of like everything, really." The distaste in his tone makes James snort, though, and he rolls onto his side, leaning off and sort of hanging down over the bed, beginning to root through something beneath it. "You insult Al's stuff like that, too?"

Scorpius shrugs, glancing over his shoulder to watch James. "If he has boring things, I don't pretend to like them just so he thinks he's interesting." Scorpius was nothing if not bluntly honest. He'd spent a lifetime growing up under the knowledge that honesty was one of the greatest virtues. It was certainly all the Malfoys had to work with these days.

"What are you doing?"

"Trying-- to be a good host. Aha."

And then he leans back, dragging out a small bottle of- something, the green glass of it smokey. James shifts to push himself back against the headboard of his bed, crossing his legs and struggling to uncork the thing.

"And, you know, there's a difference between 'not pretending' and 'being an arse.' You're aware, aren't you?"

"It's a fine line that I don't care if I cross," Scorpius says, grinning a little. A green bottle that's corked and smokey. It's either a potion that would make James's Dad bug his eyes or it's more alcohol. And this is turning into the kind of evening that he hadn't prepared for.

"Here." He strides close, taking the bottle to uncork it. He doubts James remembers he's a wizard right now, although maybe drunk magic isn't the best idea.

James relaxes a little when Scorpius takes the bottle from him, and when he uncorks it, he'll recognize the smell immediately: yep. More alcohol. (Maybe, possibly, part of James is just trying to show off. Look at how casually he pulls liquor out. Look at how relaxed he is. He's definitely and certainly an adult with all of his life ambitions in order, right?)

"Pretty sure you live on the 'arsehole' side, Malfoy. Those board games were fun and you know it."

"Oh shove off," Scorpius snarls, but his face does go a little pink. So maybe he enjoyed some of the games. So what? That doesn't mean anyone ever has to know. EVER.

One brow quirks. Tentatively, Scorpius sits on the edge of James's bed instead of at the desk. Easier to pass the bottle, right?

"You really think you ought to be drinking anymore tonight?"

"Probably not," he acknowledges, but he leans in to take the bottle from him regardless. It's with a fluid, smooth ease, all the more impressive to himself because of the way his heart is pounding in his throat. "You seem like you're getting along with the rest of the family, at least. That's a surprise."

"....Sorry, but why do you have such a hard time believing I can get on with people? You sound shocked that I'm capable of conversing over matters beyond blowjobs."

Well, it had to come up sooner or later. Anyway, Scorpius grabs the bottle and takes a swig, trying not to shudder at the taste. It's not his first drink, but he's used to, a, erm, higher class.

"Well, pardon me, but yeah, I kinda am. Seemed like you just wanted to rub my face in your blowjobs back last time we talked at school." James pauses for a moment, struggles visibly with his own phrasing, before he reaches to wiggle his fingers for the bottle. "... not literally rub my face into it."

"I was rather drunk at the time," he snaps, keeping the bottle for another swig instead of handing it back. Makes this awkwardness better. "People do stupid things when they're drunk...as you may know."

Merlin, James is getting on his last nerve.

"Also, you didn't have to explain yourself. I didn't actually think you meant that I literally rubbed your face into a blowjob. Which, by the way, is not how it works."

"Well, you're the expert, not me." He frowns when Scorpius keeps hold of the bottle, shifting toward him to try to actually grab and tug it out of his hand. "And I don't do stupid things when I'm drunk. Some of us have better self control than that, thanks."

"Oh, do you?" Scorpius eyes the bottle, lets James tug it a little more firmly, and then lets go without warning. He'll see just how tipsy James is right now after that.

"Well, sorry to be a bother. I guess if you don't want to discuss blowjobs, I ought to head to Al's room."

He didn't mean it like that. He just meant he should leave if James doesn't think he's capable of conversation. But that's not exactly what it sounded like, is it?

He jerks slightly, swaying back but not losing his balance, and it leaves him frowning. "You--"

And then he mentions the blowjob thing, and the remark wasn't well-timed at all. James's hackles rise a little as he reaches out, trying to snag Scorpius's wrist in his own, to stay him.

"Don't you dare," he growls.

Scorpius pauses as James catches his wrist. He could very easily yank it free and walk off, prove a point about something...but he doesn't. Instead he stays put, searching James's eyes. With his free hand, he snatches the bottle back.

"It was a joke," he says, dully. "Ease up, Potter."

James's expression relaxes, almost embarrassed, but he doesn't release Scorpius's wrist. Instead, his finger just flex slightly on it.

"Oi. You shouldn't be drinking that much. You're still a kid."

With a scoff, Scorpius brings the bottle to his lips and takes a drink. His mouth is wet with alcohol when he pulls the rim away.

"You're the one who brought it out. Make up your mind."

And that goes doubly for the intense way James is looking at him, gripping his wrist like that.

"I offered you one drink, not the whole bottle."

But it's clear that his eyes cut down to his mouth, linger on the sight of his wet lips. He lingers and then, almost reluctantly, releases him.

With a huff, he scoots back onto the bed again, flopping backwards and folding his arms behind his head.

"You're a pain, Malfoy. A serious pain, and you have been all week."

"I've been avoiding you all week," Scorpius snaps, sitting back against the foot of the bed and glaring over at James. "How is it that I'm a pain if we aren't even speaking to one another? I've gone out of my bloody way to stay clear of you, Potter, and now you invite me to your bedroom and give me alcohol and then lecture me for drinking and getting in your way and say I'm a pain? Merlin, you're an arse."

"Maybe you're staying out of my way, but that doesn't mean I've been able to stop thinking about you," James snaps back at him, before falling quiet and going slightly stiff. Shit. Wait. No, that came out wrong. He won't acknowledge it, though, instead maintaining a stare at the ceiling. "You just- take things too far. I offer you a drink and you try to take the whole bottle. I'm a little nice to you and you think it's okay to kiss me. You're the confusing one."

Scorpius looks up, his light eyes a little wide for once before his brows naturally furrow in confusion. James just spat that out like it's something he'd been thinking to yell at Scorpius about, but... Has he been on James's mind? This whole week? Since the kiss?

"First of all," he begins, keeping his voice low and slow, because he knows he's treading dangerous waters. "I thought we were sharing the alcohol. I had no intention of drinking the whole thing by myself. Secondly..." A pause, as Scorpius reels himself in. "I'm sorry. That I kissed you. That you've been bothered by it. That right now I want to do it again."

He wants him to. That's the hard thing to accept here: that he really, really, more than anything else right now, wants him to.

"Kind of detracts from the apology, then," James huffs, shutting his eyes and furrowing his brow. "The fact that you want to do it again, doesn't it."
